What Is OneVote?

OneVote consists of 3 simple steps:

  1. A ceremony to acknowledge that a young person is now able to exercise his or her rights of citizenship. Such a ceremony would be conducted along with High School Graduation.
  2. A pledge/oath will be taken wherein the young person will acknowledge that he/she is now a fully participating citizen and further agrees to vote in every local and national election.
  3. A Citizen Diploma will be presented to every young person at the ceremony where they “took the pledge”, that would be personalized and signed by the young person. This certificate could also contain a relevant visual image depicting an important moment in voting.

On the surface, OneVote appears less like a project and more like just an activity. Yet this simple activity can be conducted in a manner to become a rite of passage for every young person in America. Even though the last Presidential election documented a significant aggregate increase in youth voting, it is unlikely that this increase will carry over into local elections. OneVote will be a catalyst to change this.
